Authorities respond to incidents involving firearms

A local man has been arrested and charged with attempted aggravated assault after shots were fired March 30 at Shady Dell Park on Standish Street in New Albany, according to police.
Demarcus Jones, 23, turned himself over to police last week, and the second suspect, Charles Brown, 30, of Saltillo, remains at large.
The incident began the afternoon of March 30 at the Reed Street apartments when Brown allegedly pulled out a firearm in the presence of Jones and others, police said. No shots were fired at that time.
Later that afternoon Brown and Jones met at Shady Dell Park. Brown allegedly got out of a vehicle and started shooting multiple times, police said. Jones allegedly returned fire. ....

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. (WBTV) - A man accused of kidnapping a woman led officers on a multi-county pursuit that ended with him crashing along I-85 in Rowan County, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Troopers said he fired shots at officers along the way.
The pursuit started in Randolph County and ended near the Webb Road exit after the driver attempted to avoid spike strips on the interstate and veered off the highway. ....

New Charges: Driver Did Not Cross Into Bikers' Lane In N.H. Crash

A lawyer for a pickup truck driver charged with causing the deaths of seven motorcyclists in New Hampshire in 2019 has entered not guilty pleas to multiple, amended charges that no longer accuse the driver of crossing into their lane.
The change responds to a report from an independent accident reconstruction firm that examined the crash in Randolph.
Twenty-five-year-old Volodymyr Zhukovskyy faces multiple counts of negligent homicide, manslaughter, driving under the influence and reckless conduct.
The victims were members of the Jarheads Motorcycle Club.
They were from New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Meanwhile, Zhukovskyy s lawyers have asked a judge to schedule more time for jury selection and a trial. ....

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) A corrections officer accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend and her friend shortly after the women had returned home from a vacation trip will remain jailed until his murder trial, a judge rule Monday.
Essex County Judge Ronald Wigler made the decision following a detention hearing. He cited the seriousness of the charges faced by John Menendez, 23, of West New York, and noted that prosecutors “seem to have a very strong case.”
Defense Attorney Raoul Bustillo said Menendez does not plan to fight allegations that he killed the women, but will present a “passion-provocation” defense, arguing the shootings occurred in the heat of the moment. ....
